We stayed in the beautiful little town of Tálknafjörður for a few days on our 2016 Westfjords roundtrip and visited Suðureyri on the other side of the fjord from there. You get there by a gravelroad in the mountainside, so narrow that it’s simply not possible to pass another car. Suðureyri once was a whale station but is now deserted. You can still find the ruins of the houses and a bridge there. It’s an adventureland for kids, full of treasures and dangers (real dangers like loose bricks and nails standing out of timber hidden in the high grass), they discovered all kinds of things like old machinery, whale bones, shells and pebbles and secret passages.
